Paradigm

As a teacher, disciplining a student is a massive responsibility that must be handled with care. Shifting away from traditional punishment requires a true paradigm shift—a change of heart that demands constant self-reminders in the heat of the moment. Once you realize that children learn absolutely every other skill by being taught and then given ample time and opportunity to practice, it becomes clear that punishments are completely unnecessary for teaching proper behavior. This shift is not merely intellectual; it requires us to embrace empathy and understanding. We must acknowledge that children are not inherently malicious when they misbehave but are instead simply navigating a complex world. By fostering a compassionate mindset, we can better appreciate the challenges children face and respond to their needs with patience and encouragement.
